2020 is almost over — and here’s a look at 20 of the biggest stories on NewscastStudio over the past 12 months.

  1. ABC’s decision to rebrand its 1 p.m. eastern hour — again
  2. How the networks covered Kobe Bryant’s death Jan. 27 and 28, 2020
  3. Coverage of how CBS New York had its L.A. sister station produce its local newscast due to a coronavirus outbreak in its studio complex
  4. NBC’s odd “202ONE” Olympics logo design for the postponed games
  5. How “Wheel of Fortune” adapted to production during coronavirus
  6. “The Tonight Show” temporarily moves to Megyn Kelly’s former studio due to coronavirus concerns
  7. “ABC World News Tonight” moves into Studio TV3 proper
  8. Telemundo’s augmented reality for election coverage
  9. The Weather Channel’s decision to use “Covidcane” branding
  10. WJW’s daily tongue in cheek reminder of what day it is amidst the height of COVID-19 lockdowns
  11. ABC “Good Morning America” new promo
  12. CBS News’ new election branding
  13. NBC News’ election HQ in Studio 1A
  14. Fox’s 2020 Super Bowl graphics package design
  15. How “Live! with Kelly and Ryan” made their hosts look closer than they really were
  16. ABC moves into new studio for Super Tuesday
  17. A look at MSNBC’s “Velshi” production values
  18. Tips for setting up home TV studios during a pandemic
  19. How court shows are adapting production to coronavirus
  20. A new open for “NBC Nightly News”

Perhaps not surprisingly, 40% of these stories related directly to the coronavirus pandemic and its effect on TV news (not counting the story on NBC 2021 Olympics logo).

Election coverage also dominated our readers’ interest in 2020, though it’s worth noting how Kobe Bryant’s death was one of the most popular stories in 2020 but quickly became overshadowed, in terms of combined read counts, by COVID-19 related coverage.

The list also includes some more “general” TV industry news headlines — such as “Nightly” getting a new open (additional coverage of the on air changes for that broadcast when it returned to the studio after the election just barely missed making the top 20 cutoff).

In terms of broader topics, here’s a rough list that illustrates, by page views, the topics that sparked the most interest among our readers in 2020:

  • Augmented reality (this topic typically grows each year and this year marked a noticeable uptick)
  • Primaries, Super Tuesday and both the democratic and presidential debates (not including election night coverage, which already ranked high)
  • Video walls and other LED installations (again, this has been a rising trend over the years)
  • Overseas elections
  • Broadcast design, engineering and production outside the U.S.
  • Branding and logo design

NewscastStudio’s YouTube channel has reached a key milestone — 10,000 subscribers.

The channel, which features a myriad of clips related to TV news and broadcast design, now has racked up more than 8 million views since launch.

That equates to over 117,000 hours of watch time (that’s the equivalent to over 13 years!).

Our top video, of ABC News correspondent Will Reeve caught on air not wearing long pants, is our most watched video — with over 921,000 views as of this writing.

All of our top six most watched videos have over 100,000 lifetime views, with our top 10 all coming in at at least 59,000 views.

NewscastStudio has significantly invested in the use of video to accompany reporting on both our main site as well as our sister site, TVNewsMix, over the past few years.

The channel regularly features aircheck clips showcasing exemplar broadcast design, augmented reality and more, as well as the headline teases and opens for major networks during historic periods, ultimately creating a valuable archive of how TV news covered key events (including the historic coronavirus pandemic and 2020 election) at the time.

All of this comes as we near the end of 2020, which is shaping up to be another record year of page views on the NewscastStudio site proper.

Not surprisingly, election day (Nov. 3, 2020) saw the most traffic so far in November 2020 and the month as a whole appears on track to beat May 2019 as the busiest month in our history.

Video content added to YouTube appears to have contributed heavily to pushing past the 10,000 subscriber mark.

In addition to YouTube, NewscastStudio also recently launched a Giphy channel that regularly features eye catching animated GIFs of broadcast design elements.

As always, thanks to everyone who reads and watches our content.

A quick update from NewscastStudio: We recently became aware of technical issues that were causing videos featured on our popular YouTube channel to appear in significantly lower quality.

We have resolved the issue on our end and, starting Aug. 17, 2020, began uploading videos in a format that improves the quality of videos.

We apologize for this issue.

The issue was unrelated to YouTube’s pandemic practice of defaulting videos to lower quality, though to view the full quality videos, you may need to manually adjust the quality in the player.

NewscastStudio’s YouTube channel has, as of this writing, over 8,100 subscribers and has registered over 4,000 hours of view time in the past month.

All told, NewscastStudio’s videos on YouTube have been watched over 6.8 million times for a combined total of over 97,300 hours.

The numbers are in and May 14, 2019, was officially the highest trafficked day on NewscastStudio to date.

Our coverage of the massive shakeup at CBS News that included ousting Jeff Glor as anchor of “CBS Evening News” broke our previous record by over 65%.

Readers also flocked to NewscastStudio to read about the changes on CBS’s other major broadcast, “CBS This Morning.”

In addition, NewscastStudio’s ongoing coverage as the changes at CBS rolled out has continued to deliver extremely high traffic over the past few weeks.

NewscastStudio also proved a valuable resource to TV industry readers looking to learn more about how Facebook’s new logo design and changes they will need to make.
